Netflix and Excel Entertainment Enter Into Multi-Year Series Partnership

World’s leading streaming entertainment service Netflix, with over 209 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, documentaries and feature films across a wide variety of genres and languages has today announced a strategic multi-year partnership with Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment.

The banner behind the cult classic Dil Chahta Hai along with Rock On, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Lakshya, Toofaan and the Don franchise. This creative pact dovetails Netflix’s exciting and diverse series slate in India.

As one of the pioneers in on-demand long-form storytelling, Excel Entertainment will produce a variety of stories under its series banner Excel Media & Entertainment for Netflix members in over 190 countries commencing with two projects tentatively titled Dabba Cartel and Queen of the Hill.

Dabba Cartel is a story of five housewives who run a high stakes secret cartel. Style, ambition, love, friendship and betrayal set in the backdrop of jazz rich 1960s Mumbai, Queen of the Hill chronicles the dynamic relationship between two ambitious women that will change the city forever.

There are many other such production houses that have tied up with several OTT platforms. Some of them are listed below:

Red Chillies Entertainment
Shah Rukh Khan’s firm Red Chillies Entertainment is driving the content game in the OTT world. Red Chillies had struck a long-term deal with the OTT giant Netflix. Both the giants have worked on several web series like Bard Of Blood with a budget of 50 crores and the zombie thrill ride Betaal with a budget of around Rs 10 crore, and Class of ’83, which was made on a meticulous budget of over Rs 20 crore.

Dharma Productions
Dharma Productions’ digital platform Dharmatic has struck a deal with Netflix to work on ample movies and series. Karan Johar initially worked together with Netflix in the 2018 series Lust Stories and realised the wide scope of OTTs. He then proceeded to deal with Ghost Stories and Guilty.

As per reports, for a standard Dharma film, OTT platforms ensures about Rs 15-18 crore.

RSVP
Ronnie Screwvala’s productions house RSVP began delivering content for the digital platform two years back. Vicky Kaushal and Angira Dhar-starrer Love Per Square Foot was the first film from the RSVP to take a digital way.

In an interview, Ronnie Screwvala said the budget of his movies ranges from 6 to 60 crores.

Clean Slate Filmz
Anushka Sharma and her brother’s Karnesh Sharma’s production house Clean Slate Filmz was a hit in the world OTT world with Paatal Lok, which was released after Bulbul. Paatal Lokwas made on a budget of 20 crores. The audience can expect a sequel of it, too.

The new genre has it all!

This indeed proves that OTT platforms have a long way to go in India where the CineMa is addressed as the second mother.

However, theatres have reopened themselves adhering to the Covid-19 norms, but the audience has synced itself very well with the OTT platforms.
