MyPick
OTT crime drama must-watch

There is a lot happening in crime segment of online entertainment section, thanks to the Covid-19. Here are my Top-5 picks which you must watch if you have a yen for thrillers.

1. Family Man Season 2 (Amazon Prime)

There is no stopping the indefatigable Manoj Bajpai who helmed the first season with so much grittiness that the second season was awaited eagerly through the year. Now that Season 2 is here, it is one of the few web series where the sequel is as good if not better than the original. IT’s been on for sometime now but still worth a watch if you’ve missed it. Strands of the first season are beautifully embedded into the new offering though the events are never overpowered. Fast, slick, suspenseful, looks like Season 3 will be equally thrilling.

2. Mare of Easttown (Disney+Hotstar)

Not just the high of big star Kate Winslet’s stunning performance, this thrilling American crime drama series directed by Craig Zobel, emanates from small town Pennsylvania and centres around detective Mare Sheehan (Winslet) whose entire world keeps crumbling all over her as she investigates a local murder. Though now based on any true incident, the series pulls you to binge watch as it lays bare the dark side of a close community and family tragedies where lives are given and taken in the most chilling way.

3. The Undoing (Disney Hotstar)

Again centred around a biggie in Nicole Kidnman, this 2020 crime drama series has reason to be one of the highest rated shows on the OTT platforms. The tale is excellently spun around the life and times of therapist Grace Frazer, a whole lot of slick production props, an awesome screenplay, tickling dialogues and good cinematography make it a must-watch. Add to that a violent death, a missing spouse and other disruptive incidents and you have Kidman as Fraser launching a cliff hanging survival journey.

4. Black Mirror (Netflix)
A horror show without the usual supernatural elements? Yes, unbelievable but that’s Black Mirror for you with all its blood curdling events. A modern threat — the screens you engage with at home, in office or on your mobile phones — take over from good to bad to worse turning innovations into their freakiest side. Every episode has a new storyline, where humanity’s greatest innovations turn to the darkest side, turning the world upside down. You will want to run but the dark forces will keep you on it till the end comes calling.

5. Hit & Run (Netflix)
This Israeli American action thriller has all the elements that will keep any thrill buff engaged as never before. There is mystery, there is suspense and there is cutting edge action to keep company. Accessible in Hindi and English, it showcases the killing of a woman who was happily married till a mysterious hit-and-run accident happens. The man investigates suspecting foul play and murder and what is revealed in the end takes your breath away.
