Rohit Sharma is India’s new ODI captain, replacing Virat Kohli

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli will be no longer be India’s ODI Captain. The National Selection Committee has announced Rohit Sharma as the sole white-ball captain of the teamm till 2023 50-over World Cup.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward.

 

Kohli led India in all three formats until the Twenty20 World Cup last month, after which Rohit Sharma was given charge of 20-overs captaincy.

Many expected Kohli, who remains the test captain, to lead India in the 50-overs World Cup on home soil in 2023 but the board opted for a single white-ball skipper.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee … decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward,” board secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

In another development, the selection committee has also removed Test Vice Captain Ajinkya Rahane and made Rohit the deputy.

The BCCI announced the 18-member squad for the three-match Test series against South Africa starting from December 26. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, spinner Axar Patel, and opener Shubman Gill were not included in the squad due to various injuries.

Beginning on Dec. 26, India are scheduled to play three tests in South Africa, followed by three one-day internationals.
