Lakhere first Indian woman to shoot Gold at Paralympics

India’s Avani Lakhera has become the first Indian woman to win Gold in the R-2 women’s 10 meters Air Rifle Standing SH1 at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

The 19-year-old has made created a world record of 249.9, which is a new Paralympic record, too.

This is India’s fifth medal in the Tokyo Paralympics after Bhavinben Patel secured a Silver in the Women’s Table Tennis Class-4 category, Yogesh Kathunia won the Silver medal in discus throw, Nishad Kumar grabbed another Silver in Men’s T47 High Jump, and Vinod Kumar secured a Bronze medal in the discus throw.

The golden girl, who hails from Jaipur met with an accident along with her father in 2012 when she was travelling from Jaipur to Dholpur. After some time, her father recovered, but Avani had to spend more than a couple of months in the hospital.

Due to Reed’s bone injury, she could not stand or walk and has been in a wheelchair since then.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted and congratulated the Indian athlete on her win.
